Discover designer Melissa Davis’s brilliant small space decorating secrets on House & Home!

When Melissa downsized to a condo for her and her son, she didn’t go the typical small space decorating route. Instead, she relied on large furniture to anchor the space and an open-concept floor plan to create great flow. A large dining table that seats 10 has additional seating that doubles as storage. A big sofa centers the living room, while collected art decorates the space throughout. Both bedrooms are kept simple, leaving space to evolve over time. The result is a condo that has all the comforts of a house.

I Chatted Home Tech on Breakfast Television at #NHS15

I Chatted about #SmartHome products with Jen Valentyne, Live at #NHS15 on Breakfast Television.

MaRS Discovery District will be at the show (booth 1424) showcasing the latest and greatest in Canadian Innovation.  I shared a few products from their startup showcase today along with a few of my personal favourites that I’m using on projects lately.

In order of appearance:

e-Motion: GestureSense enabled e-Motion switch is a highly intuitive, ergonomic and a germ-free touchless light control solution for public and private spaces.

The Nest: Meet the next generation thermostat. Most people leave the house at one temperature and forget to change it. So the Nest Learning Thermostat learns your schedule, programs itself and can be controlled from your phone. Teach it well and the Nest Thermostat can lower your heating and cooling bills up to 20%.

August Smart Lock: The August Smart Lock provides intelligent, secure access to your home. Now you can control who can enter and who can’t—without the need for keys or codes. And you can do it all from your smartphone.

HouseIT: An online design platform that connects homeowners with emerging designers, who deliver a range of custom designs for condos or houses. Through a crowdsourcing model, they’re giving architectural and interior designers the opportunity to find new and interesting projects to kickstart their careers. The goal is to make great design more accessible to everyone, while educating the public, and giving back to the design community.

Casalife: The lovely side table used to house the items today was in fact equipped with a flip-top access panel with both power and USB builtin.  The silly talking head designer forgot to mention it, but tech integrated furniture is smart two ways.

Do stop by the show.  There is quite literally everything one might want or need for home or garden.
